This annual cycle race makes the Tour de France look like a breeze as the event crosses the west to east coast of America covering more than 3,000 miles in just seven days. The tour begins on 11 June 2008 and this brave (some might say foolhardy!) team of eight will cross mountain ranges and climb a total of 108,000 feet (four times the height of Everest) before crossing the finish line. Oh yes, and the temperature will swing from the mid-summer burn in the Arizona desert to near-freezing some nights. All this in just seven days which is only possible by cycling in relay throughout the whole 24 hours of each day!
Not discouraged by any of this, the team have embraced this test of endurance and are raising funds for CLIC Sargent on their way.
top of pageThis remarkable team of eight consists of; Alex Waters (21), a British racing driver who has fought cancer and is the driving force behind the team and a long term CLIC Sargent supporter, Tony Mitchell a world champion 400 metre hurdler (veteran class) and Chrissi Dietsche, a former professional snowboarder who was ranked number four in the world. In amongst these professional athletes, you will also find Owen Slot, chief sporting editor of The Times, Giles Darlymple, an environmental engineer, Jonny Wates, the entrepreneur, as well as sponsorship consultant, Wynton Faure, and the charismatic fitness instructor, Steve Young.
To support the team and help them to achieve their target to raise £80,000 to help CLIC Sargent make a difference to the lives of children and families affected by cancer, please make a donation at: http://www.justgiving.com/united8.
